When Words Aren’t Enough

Sometimes we know that something is troubling us, but we can’t quite put it into words. Emotions, memories, fears, and experiences can remain beneath the surface of our conscious awareness.

Creative expression can offer another way in.

Drawing, painting, working with color, or creating a mandala can help us express feelings and experiences that may be difficult to explain verbally. Sometimes what we create on paper reveals something our subconscious already knows—but our conscious mind doesn’t understand yet.

Bringing the Unconscious Into Awareness

My approach to creative expression is influenced in part by the work of Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, who explored dreams, symbols, and imagery as ways of understanding the unconscious mind.

Jung believed that images could reveal aspects of ourselves that aren’t always accessible through rational thought alone. He frequently created mandalas—circular images that became an important part of his own exploration of the inner world.

In therapy, creative work can provide another way to become curious about what may be happening beneath the surface.

Why Mandalas?

A mandala is a circular design that can be as simple or complex as you choose. There is no “right” way to create one.

The colors, shapes, symbols, and images that emerge may provide opportunities for reflection and self-discovery. Rather than worrying about what your artwork is supposed to mean, we can become curious about what it means to you.

Sometimes the process itself—slowing down, choosing colors, creating shapes, and focusing on the present moment—can also be calming and meditative.

You Don’t Have to Be an Artist

Creative expression in therapy isn’t about artistic ability or producing something beautiful. You don’t need any art experience.

The goal is the process, not the finished product.

Art gives us another language for exploring emotions and experiences. Something that may be difficult to say out loud can sometimes feel easier to explore first through an image, color, shape, or symbol.

How Can Creative Expression Help?

Depending on your individual needs, incorporating art into our work together may help you:

  • Express emotions that are difficult to put into words
  • Explore unconscious thoughts, feelings, and patterns
  • Develop greater self-awareness
  • Process difficult experiences
  • Reduce stress and quiet an overactive mind
  • Discover new perspectives and insights

Creative expression can also work naturally alongside mindfulness, meditation, dream work, talk therapy, and other therapeutic approaches.

Discovering What You Already Know

Sometimes healing isn’t about finding an answer outside ourselves. It is about becoming quiet enough to recognize what is already there.

Art can provide a bridge between the conscious and unconscious—helping us bring feelings, images, and insights to the surface where we can begin to understand and work with them.

The image often comes before the words. Understanding can come afterward.

If talking alone doesn’t seem to express everything you’re feeling, incorporating creative expression into therapy may offer another way to explore your inner experience and move toward greater awareness, healing, and wholeness.
